Distributions

• Windows: MiKTeX (use 2.7)
• Mac: MacTeX
• Linux: LaTeX (use the package management tools included with your flavor of Linux: RPM, Yum, apt, portage, etc).

Tools

• TeXnicCenter is an integrated development environment (IDE) for LaTeX on Windows. Brand new users may benefit from the pre-defined building blocks, and compiler management.
• Vim is a free, multi-platform text editor geared toward programmers and power users.
